A prerequisite for affiliation in our sisterhood, scholastic achievement is key to the success of not only the Sorority but also each member. Historically, Beta Zeta Zeta Chapter has annually awarded one or more financial scholarships to young ladies who were finalists in the Cincinnati Miss Black Teen Pageant, graduating high school seniors and/or non-traditional students who pursued non-traditional career paths or who began or returned to college after the age of 30. Quarterly book scholarships were also awarded to members of Beta Eta, the undergraduate chapter we sponsored for more than 30 years. Currently, the Chapter awards The Wilma E. Lacy Memorial Scholarship for non-traditional college students and The Doris Larkin McAdams Memorial Scholarship for college-bound high school seniors. Brief biographies of our scholarship namesakes
Wilma E. Lacy - Following her graduation from the Washington College of Pharmacy in Washington DC., Wilma E. Lacy practiced pharmacy in her home state of South Carolina and again in Memphis, Tennessee before moving to Cincinnati in 1930 to wed her husband, Franklin, who was also a pharmacist. She was Cincinnati’s first black female pharmacist and in 1962 retired from the Shoemaker Health Clinic where she worked for more than 30 years. A charter member of Beta Zeta Zeta Chapter, she was named Zeta of the Year in 1982. In 1989 she was again recognized by the Cincinnati Pharmaceutical Association for her financial support of black students at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Pharmacy. Because, during her career, pharmacy was such a non-traditional field of study for people of color, the Chapter awards our non-traditional scholarship in her honor.
Doris Larkin McAdams was a consummate club and organization member. She embraced and exemplified the ideals of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. which she joined in 1943. A life member of the Sorority, she was named Beta Zeta Zeta’s Woman of the Year in 1977 and again in 2008. In addition to her Sorority work, her professional training and lifelong career was focused on education. She was a teacher, librarian, and later an administrator in the Cincinnati Public Schools system and thus helped to shape the lives of many young people, first in Raleigh, North Carolina and later here in Cincinnati, Ohio. To honor her service to Beta Zeta Zeta Chapter, and especially, her lifelong commitment to education, each spring the Chapter awards a scholarship to a graduating female high school senior.
